DISCUSSION FORUM PANEL AND TOPIC ANNOUNCED

The title and panel for the Discussion Forum to be held at the 2008 Stereoscopic Displays and Applications conference (11am - 12 noon 29 January 2008) have now been announced:

"What's so great about Stereoscopic Displays, anyway?"

Each year the SD&A discussion forum provides a venue for the lively discussion of a wide range of stereoscopic topics. This year's topic explores the WOW factor of stereoscopic displays and the aspects that are driving the growing usage of stereoscopic displays. A panel of industry specialists will lead the discussion.

Moderator: Lenny Lipton, CTO, REAL D
Panel: Sue R. Barry, Professor of Cell Biology, Mount Holyoke College
Christopher W. Tyler, Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute
Bernice E. Rogowitz, IBM Corp.
Chris Chinnock, Insight Media

Selected panel biographies:

Professor Sue Barry is the subject of the Oliver Sacks article "Stereo Sue" which appeared in the June 2006 issue of The New Yorker magazine. She developed strabismus in early infancy and although she had vision in both eyes, she has spent most of her life without stereoscopic vision. As an adult she recently regained her stereoscopic vision after vision therapy sessions with an opthamologist. She can now provide a unique insight into the experience of stereoscopic vision and is currently writing a book on her stereoscopic insights.

Christopher W. Tyler is a visual psychophysicist and Head of the Smith-Kettlewell Brain Imaging Center. In 1979, working with Béla Julesz at Bell Labs, he created the first random-dot autostereogram (also known as single-image random-dot stereogram - SIRDS) which allowed the brain to see 3D shapes from a single 2D image without the aid of optical equipment. People in shopping malls have been baffled by them ever since.

SD&A 2008 BANNER AD

The SD&A 2008 conference now has a banner advert to help publicise the conference.
The banner can be seen by clicking here:
http://www.stereoscopic.org/sda2008banner.gif

If you feel so inclined, we would appreciate your help in publicising the conference. The banner ad can be placed on a web site under your control by pasting the following html code:

<center><a href="http://www.stereoscopic.org/"><img src="http://www.stereoscopic.org/sda2008banner.gif" alt="Stereoscopic Displays and Applications conference" width="726" height="86" border="0"></a></center>

As well as the warm glow of knowing you're helping promote the conference and the stereoscopic 3D industry, we'll also be offering several prizes for a selection of those who place the banner ad on their website, and register their placement with Andrew Woods.

3D THEATRE SESSION - LAST CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

The purpose of the 3D Theatre session at each year's SD&A conference is to showcase how 3D video is being used and produced around the world. A vast catalog of 3D material has been shown over the years as can be seen from this page: http://www.stereoscopic.org/3dcinema/index.html

We are currently seeking submissions to the 3D Theatre Session. In particular we wish to receive 3D footage which has high production values, or illustrates a real stereoscopic application.

We can cope with a wide range of stereoscopic video data formats, from field-sequential right up to dual 1920x1080. All material needs to be preloaded onto our stereoscopic media server before the meeting - due to time constraints we cannot accept material at the conference.

If you have suitable 3D footage (and own the rights or can negotiate permission), please contact Andrew Woods by 5 December. This is our last public call for submissions.

DEMONSTRATION SESSION -- REGISTER NOW FOR DEMO SPACE

This year the highly successful Stereoscopic Displays and Applications
conference Demonstration Session will again be held in cooperation with
the whole of the Electronic Imaging Symposium. Demonstrations will
include hardware and software in support of author presentations and
also commercial demonstrations.

At the last SD&A conference, there were over 30 stereoscopic displays on
show. This probably represents the largest collection of different
electronic stereoscopic displays on show in one location EVER - you can
see pictures here:
www.stereoscopic.org/2007/demo.html

The best way to witness a stereoscopic display is with your own two
eyes. What better way to see so many different commercial stereoscopic
displays in one quick trip than at this one event.

If you are interested in demonstrating at this session, you can register
for a table or booth using the form available from this page:
http://www.stereoscopic.org/demo/index.html

Register for a demostration table/booth before 30 November and save
US$100.

The demonstration session runs 5:30-8:30pm Tuesday 29th January 2008 at
the San Jose Convention Center, San Jose, California.

Entry to the Demonstration session is included in all EI Symposium
registrations. It is also possible to attend the Demonstration Session
without registering for the EI Symposium, however unlike previous years
there is a fee to attend the demonstration session in such cases:
